Nine Brown Players Earn All-Ivy Football Honors

Providence, R.I. – Brown had nine of its players selected to the 2014 All-Ivy Football Team as selected by the eight Ancient Eight head coaches. Earning First Team All-Ivy honors are senior linebacker Xavier Russo (San Francisco, CA), senior offensive guard Nicholas Codrea (Tallmadge, OH) and senior defensive back Jacob Supron (Mansfield, OH). Second Team All-Ivy honorees include senior wide receiver Brian Strachan (Wellesley, MA) and defensive tackle Zach Sparber (Norwood, NJ), while senior linebacker Daniel Giovacchini (Acton, MA), junior center John Heile,  junior outside linebacker Ryan MacDonald (Falmouth, ME), and junior defensive end Chad Berry (East Lyme, CT) earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy honors.

 

A two-year starter at inside linebacker, Russo led the Bears in tackles by a wide margin, making 80 total tackles, third best in the Ivy League. His five quarterback sacks led the Bears and ranked third in the Ivy League. A Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator, he led the squad with 13 tackles against Yale, made a game high nine tackles vs. Georgetown, including nine solo hits, and led the team by making nine tackles against Harvard. Russo capped off a brilliant career with three quarterback sacks in his final game vs. Columbia.

 

Supron was the Brown team leader with two interceptions and ranked fifth on the Bears' team with 42 tackles, including three for a loss.  He was the College Sports Madness Ivy League Player of the Week for his effort against URI, making five solo tackles, including one for a loss of 10 yards, while intercepting a pass, and returning it 27 yards to set up Brown's first touchdown. An Engineering concentrator, Supron made a team high 10 tackles vs. Georgetown, including eight solo hits. 

 

Codrea and Heile played key roles in the success of the Bears' offensive line that ranked third in the Ivy League in passing offense with 267.1 yards per game. The Bears' offense ranked second in the Ivy League in time of possession, averaging 31:25 minutes per game.  Brown's offensive line allowed just 16 sacks, third best in the Ivy League. Codrea, a Business Economics and History concentrator, and Heile, a Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator, are seasoned veterans, who started all 10 games in 2014 after seeing significant playing time in 2013.

 

Strachan became Brown's go-to receiver in 2014 and made a team leading 56 catches, six best in the Ivy League, for 668 yards.  His seven touchdown receptions also led the Bears. A Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations – Economics concentrator, he caught 10 passes for 146 yards, both career highs, and a 20-yard touchdown against Princeton. Strachan had a big day against Holy Cross, making eight receptions for 98 yards with three touchdown receptions, including a 25-yard TD catch in the first overtime period.

 

Sparber led the Bears' defensive line with 38 total tackles, including 19 solo hits and four tackles for a loss. He made six tackles vs. Georgetown, including two solo hits. A Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations – Political Science concentrator, Sparber made six tackles vs. Princeton, and made five tackles against Cornell with three tackles for a loss and a quarterback sack.

 

MacDonald earned a starting role and responded by making 45 tackles, fourth on the Brown team, while also making an interception. He scooped up a fumble vs. Yale and scampered 53 yards for a touchdown, and made seven tackles against the Bulldogs. MacDonald made seven tackles against Dartmouth, seven tackles vs. Princeton, and made six tackles vs. Holy Cross, intercepting a pass at the goal line to stop a Crusaders' drive. He is a Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator.

 

Giovacchini earned All-Ivy honors for the second straight season and is a three-year starter for the Bears, playing in 39 career games. He ranked third on the Brown team with 46 total tackles, including three for a loss.  Giovacchini stepped up against Dartmouth with 11 tackles, including a quarterback sack, and made eight tackles against Yale. A National Football Foundation Scholar Athlete award nominee and Business Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator at Brown, Giovacchini is also a Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection.

 

Berry ranked second on the Brown team with five tackles for a loss of 22 yards and three quarterback sacks.  He registered a quarterback sack against Penn and had two tackles for a loss with a fumble recovery vs. URI. Berry, a Business, Entrepreneurship and Organizations concentrator, made 33 total tackles on the season.  He has a nose for the ball, forcing two fumbles and recovering two fumbles for the season.
