Men's Crew Takes First at the Head of the Genesee

Oct. 10, 2006

Rochester, NY - This past weekend was the first fall racing for all Brown boats. The varsity squad headed north to race at the Head of the Genesee, while the freshman squad made their way south to race at the Head of the Housatonic.

The Head of the Genesee, formerly the Stonehurst Regatta, features a three-mile race in the morning and a 1,500-meter race in the afternoon.

Brown entered two boats in the Open Eights and two boats in the Open Fours. The varsity eight started the racing season by winning the morning head race by three seconds over Syracuse and thirteen seconds over Harvard.

They then followed up their performance with a commanding victory in the 1,500 race. Brown posted the fastest time of the day with a 4:04.27, besting Harvard's time by 7.5 seconds and Syracuse's time by 8.3 seconds. By winning both the head race and the 1,500 race, Brown returns to Providence with the George M. Angle Cup for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

The junior varsity finished fifth overall in the Open Eight race and posted the second fastest time of the day in the afternoon's 1,500 race. The JV rowed a 4:10.14. The solid afternoon race put them only 16 seconds behind the Syracuse varsity and 9 seconds behind the Harvard varsity's overall time.

Brown continued its strong performance by placing first and third in the Open Fours event. The "A" four won both the morning head race and the afternoon sprint to capture the John S. Bernfield Cup. The "B" four finished third in both the morning and afternoon races to add to Brown's medal haul.

The Brown freshman opened their racing careers with a strong performance at the Head of the Housatonic. The crew went off third behind the Yale "A" and "B" boats and was able to defeat both crews on their home river. It was a close race between the Brown "A" boat and the Yale "A" boat, with Bruno getting the better of the outcome by four seconds. Brown finished in 13:57.3 and Yale finished in 14:01.9. The Yale "B" boat was 2:25 behind the winning time. Unfortunately, due to timing problems there was no time taken for the Brown "B" boat.

Bruno returns to the racing scene in two weeks at the Head of the Charles.
