Bears Tally Two First-Place Finishes at IRA Championships

Camden, NJ - After solid performances in the heats on Thursday at the IRA National Championships, the Brown crews will compete today and battle for spots in the finals tomorrow.

The eighth-seeded Brown varsity eight was one second shy of first-place Washington (5:35.9) yesterday, with a time of 5:36.6. The top two teams advanced to today's semi-finals, while Syracuse (5:48.8), Purdue (5:52.036), Holy Cross (5:59.8), and Dartmouth (6:00.7) earned a spot in the repachage. Bruno will take on California, Harvard, Yale, Wisconsin and Oregon State in the semis at 12:12 p.m. this afternoon.

In the freshman eight race, the second-seeded Brown oarsman dominated taking first-place with a 5:48.1. Finishing behind Brown was Stanford (5:53.0), Yale (5:56.0), Wisconsin (5:57.7), Georgetown (6:07.8), and Dartmouth (6:16.0). They will compete at 11:24 today, and will challenge Northeastern, Princeton, California, Cornell and George Washington.

Also doing a stellar job was Brown's second varsity eight, as they earned first-place with a time of 5:46.7 and a spot in the semis today at 1:12 p.m. The Bears finished ahead of Washington (5:50.6), Harvard "B" (5:54.8), Yale "B" (5:57.7), Princeton (6:05.0), and Holy Cross (6:05.6). Bruno will compete against Yale "B", Syracuse, Harvard "A", Cornell, and Pennsylvania in the semis this afternoon.

The men's varsity four placed second in the time-trial with a 5:31.6. Temple came in first with a 5:30.0, and Puget Sound in third with a 5:32.5. Crews finishing in places 1-12 move on to "A" and "B" seminfinals and an opportunity to qualify for Petite and Grand Finals. The fours will go at 2:00 p.m. today.

Brown's varsity four (without a coxswain) finished in fifth with a 6:46.6. Hobart (6:23.0) placed first, Grand Valley (6:32.3) was second, and Rutgers (6:37.9) was third. The fours landed in the repachage, and will take-on Lehigh, Gonzaga, Grand Valley, and Wisconsin today at 10:00 a.m.

Bruno's freshman four placed sixth in its heat yesterday, as California secured first with a 6:34.0. Harvard (6:42.9) came in second, Georgetown (6:58.7) in third, Minnesota (7:04.4) in fourth, and Michigan took fifth with a 7:05.5. Bruno then took third in the repachage with a 6:59.4, and will compete in the semis today at 9:12 a.m. Brown will race against Fordham, Wisconsin, Cornell, Delaware, and Michigan.
