The Brown varsity men beat Dartmouth by two thirds of a length for the Atalanta Cup Saturday morning ,completing a sweep of four races from the Big Green on the Seekonk River. It was the second victory of the season for the Brown varsity and its time of 5:40. 72 was the fastest it has turned in this season.
The results were especially satisfying for head coach Paul Cooke after losing those races to Dartmouth and Hanover last year.
Getting off at 42 1/2 strokes a minute, the Brown varsity surged to a two-seat lead in the first 20 strokes of the race and held that margin for the first 500 meters. Then Dartmouth began pushing back."I was worried at that point,'' said Cooke,'' but our crew did whatever it took to keep Dartmouth from getting past.'' At the 1000-meter mark Jog thought the two crews were even, but then Brown took a power 10 and in the third 500-meter segment of the race the Bears moved out to a one-length lead.
Rowing at 40 strokes a minute, the Dartmouth crew took back a third of a length in the last 500 meters, but the Brown lead never appeared to be seriously jeopardized. Brown won the second-varsity, first freshman and varsity fours races easily.
The Bears will continue action at Princeton on Saturday, May 1 when they race against Princeton and Yale.
