GOLD RIVER, Calif. – Brown University men's crew earned a pair of top-two finishes as the Bears opened the first day of competition at the 2017 IRA National Championship Friday on Lake Natoma.

The varsity eight and second varsity boats both advanced directly to Saturday's semifinals, while the varsity four won the second repechage to qualify for the A/B semifinals. Brown's third varsity boat was narrowly edged for third place in the first repechage and will race in the C/D semis.

The Brown varsity kicked off the regatta with the opening heat and battled Washington down the stretch as the two crews went head-to-head down the middle lanes of the course. Washington jumped out to an early lead while Brown and Northeastern fought for second-place position. Bruno quickly moved out in front with a three-seat lead over Northeastern and then started to push Washington at the midway point, using a strong rhythm for a full-length advantage over the third-place boat. Washington held off Brown for the win before Brown crossed second at 5:38.083 to advance directly to the semifinals.

In the second varsity eight, Washington used a clean start to pave a spacious lead over the rest of the pack. Brown, racing out of the fourth lane, was able to secure the second position around the 300-meter mark. Nevertheless, George Washington gained ground during the middle 1,000 meters as the two crews jostled for second place. The Bears responded, however, and pulled away from George Washington in the final 500 meters. Brown took second at 5:50.626 for a direct spot in the semifinals.

Brown was one of five crews in the third heat of the third varsity event. California raced off the line and held open water for a majority of the race to claim the top spot. Brown moved up to third place at the 500-meter mark, but could not close the gap on Cornell, as the Bears took third in a time of 6:01.46.

In the third varsity repechage, Syracuse established a slim lead throughout out most of the race, before Northeastern and Brown charged during the final 400 meters in a fight for two A/B semifinal spots. Nevertheless, Brown was edged by less than a second and took third place at the line, moving to the C/D semifinals.

Brown was one of five boats in the opening heat of the varsity four. Navy opened with an early lead and held strong the rest of the way to capture the lone direct qualification to the semifinals. Brown placed fourth in a time of 6:35.660. In the repechage, Bruno was in third place after the opening 500 meters, but increased the tempo during the second 500 to pass Colgate and pull level with Wisconsin at the midway mark. The Bears continued to attack as they gained a two-seat lead over the Badgers in the third 500 meters. Brown padded the lead down the stretch, crossing in a winning time of 6:46.022 for a spot in the A/B semis.

The Bears will return for the IRA semifinals Saturday morning, starting with the varsity eight at 11:08 AM (EST). The second varsity will race at 11:56 AM (EST), followed by the third varsity at 12:36 PM (EST) and varsity four at 12:52 PM (EST).
