WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Brown men's crew earned a trio of top-two finishes as the Bears opened the first day of competition at the 2016 IRA National Championship Friday at Mercer Lake.

Brown's varsity eight, second varsity and third varsity boats earned top-two finishes for direct qualification to Saturday's semifinals, while the varsity four placed fifth in the afternoon repechage and will race in the third semifinal on Saturday.

The Brown varsity opened the morning in the fourth heat, which included five-time defending national champion Washington. The Huskies moved out to an early lead, while Dartmouth held a slim lead over Brown at 500 meters. Brown then moved past the Big Green near the midway point and made a push on Washington, but the Huskies pulled away to cross first at 5:45.50. Brown finished runner-up in a time of 5:52.04 to move directly to the semifinals.

In the second varsity heat, the Bears used a strong start to pull even with Washington, followed by Dartmouth early in the race. After Washington pulled away from the pack, Dartmouth began to move up for second place at 750 meters, but the Bears answered back with a two-set advantage. From there, Washington and Brown separated from the rest of the crews to finish first and second, respectively, at 5:55.42 and 5:58.20.

The final heat of the third varsity featured five Ivy League crews, while Harvard maintained an early lead over Brown and Yale at the start. The Crimson held a quarter-length lead over Brown at the 500-meter mark, followed by Yale and Dartmouth in a battle for the third position. Dartmouth made a move near 800 meters, but by the midway point, Brown reestablished a firm second-place position and cruised to runner-up at 5:55.35. Harvard claimed first in a time of 5:52.06.

Brown was one of seven boats in the opening heat of the varsity four. Wisconsin jumped out to an early lead and held strong the rest of the way to earn the only direct qualification to the semifinals. Brown crossed fourth in a time of 6:48.88. Brown then placed fifth in the third afternoon repechage and will race in the third semifinal Saturday at 10:46 am.
