GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Brown men's crew enjoyed an impressive first day at the 2013 IRA National Championship, as the Bears advanced all five boats to the semifinals Friday morning on Lake Natoma. The second varsity, freshman eight and open four all won their heats, and the varsity eight and varsity four finished second as all five boats earned direct qualification to the next round.

Brown started with the first heat of the varsity eight in the opening event of the day and dueled California throughout the duration of the race. The Bears jumped out to quick start but Cal moved out in front for the slight lead at the midway mark. Brown closed past Cornell to pull right behind Cal in second place, but the Golden Bears held on for the victory at 5:40.98. Bruno was not far behind at 5:41.71 as the top two teams earned the automatic berth to Saturday's semifinals.

In the second varsity, Brown edged Wisconsin in the second heat to earn the automatic move to the semifinals. Yale opened with the early lead, while Brown held position in second place for the first 1,000 meters. From there, Yale dropped back into third, allowing the Bears to take the lead and Wisconsin to move into second. Brown and Wisconsin were neck-and-neck the rest of the way, but the Bears held on for the win at 5:55.47. Wisconsin took second at 5:56.53.

Brown put together another impressive performance in the freshman eight, with the top three teams in each heat earning automatic qualifiers to the semifinals. Cal opened with an aggressive start for a three-seat lead over Brown, while Princeton sat one-seat back in third. The three boats remained in position before Brown made a move just before the 1,000-meter mark. Cal answered at first, but the Bears soon moved into the lead for a two-seat advantage nearing 1,500 meters. Brown held a comfortable four-seat lead down the stretch and closed it out with the win at 5:57.88 to qualify directly to the semifinals.

In the varsity four, California took a strong lead at the start with Wisconsin, Brown and Oregon State following in second, third and fourth, respectively. Brown made a surge near 1,000 meters to move past Wisconsin and pull into second place. The Bears maintained their momentum over the next 300 meters, opening a length over Wisconsin to secure second at 6:41.88 with a direct qualification to the semifinal round. Cal finished first in a time of 6:37.43.

In the final race of the morning, the open four, the trio of Oregon State, Harvard and Brown separated from the rest of the pack and all qualified for the semifinals. Oregon State opened with a two-seat lead on Harvard, with Brown holding a comfortable pace over Holy Cross in third. The Bears made a move at around the midway point and eventually moved past Harvard before taking a three-seat lead over Oregon State, setting up a comfortable open water lead in the final 500 meters for the victory at 6:41.85.

The Bears return to action for the second day of the IRAs on Saturday, June 1 on Lake Natoma. The seeding for each race will be decided following Friday's repechage heats.
