PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The first races of the 2011-12 season featured two rookie boats as the Brown freshman competed in their inaugural races as Bears oarsman. The meet was held at the Head of the Housatonic in Shelton, Conn.
The first freshmen boat lead off in the time-trial style, head race, three spots in front of the Yale rookies. On their home course, The Bulldogs were able to make up a small margin on the young Bears over the 15-minute race. Bruno finished in 15:07.02, just two seconds behind Yale.
The Brown second freshmen boat was able to pass one crew and finished fourth overall in the same event, the Collegiate Novice 8, ending with a time of 17:19.0
"The freshmen raced well this weekend in both boats," said assistant coach Joe Donahue. "The freshmen are determined to learn from their experience this weekend and apply themselves on the water over the next two weeks when the first rookie boat will race at the Head of the Charles."
