Varsity Four Speeds Ahead of the Pack as Bears Advance Four Boats to IRA Semis

Camden, N.J. – Facing a grueling opening slate, the Bears powered their way to impressive finishes on the first day of competition at the 2011 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta. The Brown varsity four boat showed off the fastest speed of the day, winning by over three lengths, while Bruno's varsity eight and second varsity both placed second against National No. 1 seed Washington and advanced to tomorrow morning's semifinals. The Bears' freshman boat took the long way to the semis, winning the repechage this afternoon.

The Brown varsity four boat sprinted away to an 11 second victory over second-place Syracuse and posted the fastest time of any four at 6:14.553. No. 1 ranked Washington boasted the second-fastest time at 6:17.282.

The Bears had to deal with the top-ranked Huskies in the first heat of the V8 as well. Facing the best in the country seemed to bring out the best in Brown as Bruno stuck with Washington and the two teams separated themselves from the rest of the field. Brown finished less than a second off the pace at 5:33.726, and over seven seconds ahead of third-place Cornell.

The second varsity race was hotly contested as Washington, Brown, BU and Princeton all rowed a strong race. The Bears took second, coming in two seconds behind the Huskies, but edged Boston by just two tenths of a second.

The miniscule margin of victory went the other way for Brown in the freshman eight race, as Navy narrowly edged the Bears for second, and automatic trip to the semifinals, by four hundredths of a second.

Bruno got a second chance in the afternoon repechage and topped Stanford by over eight seconds to advance to tomorrow morning's semifinals.

Brown's open four boat will also race again in the repahage as only one boat from each heat advance to the grand finals. The Bears took second in their race at 6:28.001, finished four seconds behind Harvard. Their second-chance race will take place tomorrow afternoon.
