• Gavin Crynes Earns Spring Academic All-Ivy Recognition

    Providence, RI - The Ivy League released its spring list of Academic All-Ivy honorees, with 10 Brown student-athletes being recognized. The five males and five females were starters or key reserves on their respective varsity teams and carry a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average.

    Camden, NJ – The Brown men’s crew recorded another terrific performance at the final day of the IRA National Championship Regatta on Saturday morning, placing four boats in the top-six in the country in their event, highlighted by a silver medal in the second varsity eight. Additionally, the varsity eight, varsity four, and open four each finished in the top six nationally, while the freshman eight placed eighth overall.

    Camden, NJ – Brown enjoyed another outstanding day at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Friday morning, as four of five boats qualified for the Grand Finals, giving them a shot to compete tomorrow for a national title. The Open 4, Varsity 4, Second Varsity 8, and Varsity 8 each earned spots in the top finals in their events, while the Freshman 8 will compete in the Petite Final, with the opportunity to finish as high as seventh in the country.

    Camden, NJ – The Brown men’s crew turned in an impressive first day at the 2010 IRA National Championship Regatta on Friday, as all five boats advanced to tomorrow’s semifinals. The Second Varsity 8 became the first boat to earn a spot, turning in the fastest time in the event while winning its heat, and was joined by the Open 4 in the morning. The Varsity 8, Freshman 8, and Varsity 4 then followed, as each won its rep in the afternoon to move on as well.
  • Five Brown Boats Earn Bids to IRA National Championship Regatta

    Providence, RI - The ECAC recently announced the field for this season's men's crew IRA National Championship Regatta, with five Brown boats earning spots among the prestigious field. The Bears received bids for each of the heavyweight events, and will compete in the Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, Freshman 8, Varsity 4, and Open 4 races, where they will look to build on a third place overall finish last season.
  • Brown Takes Third at EARC Sprints, Wins Second Varsity Eight

    Worcester, MA - The Bears competed at the EARC Sprints in Worcester on Sunday, placing third in the varsity eight behind only Harvard and Princeton. By virtue of being the first Ivy crew to finish, Harvard also takes the 2010 Ivy League Championship. Brown had its highest finish of the day in the second varsity, picking up the win in a very impressive field.

    Princeton, NJ – The Brown men’s crew wrapped up an undefeated regular season at Princeton on Saturday morning, winning three of four events against the Tigers, including the varsity eight race that decided the 2010 Content Cup. The Bears pulled an impressive 5:37.4 to edge the Princeton men, and also won the second varsity eight and the varsity four.
  • Brown Defends Atalanta Cup With Sweep of Dartmouth

    Providence, RI – Brown successfully defended the Atalanta Cup against Dartmouth on Saturday evening, taking open water wins in all four events to sweep the Big Green on the Seekonk River. The varsity eight turned in the fastest time of the day on an outgoing tide, rowing 5:58.6 as the only boat to break six minutes.
  • Men's Crew Takes 2010 Dreissigacker Cup, Sweeps Northeastern

    Boston, MA – The Brown men’s crew retained the Dreissigacker Cup for another season on Saturday afternoon, taking an exciting varsity eight race over Northeastern in 5:40.0, just over a second ahead of the Huskies, who finished in 5:41.4. The Bears also won the second varsity eight and freshman eight races to complete a sweep of Northeastern and continue their impressive start to the season.

    Providence, RI - Brown's varsity eight rowed an impressive 5:41.5 on Saturday evening to win an important early season test against a potential national contender in Harvard on the Seekonk River. The Crimson nearly matched Brown, crossing the line in 5:42.5, but the Bears came up with the final push to take home the 2010 Stein Cup.

    Derby, CT – Despite coming off a weekend of travel to the San Diego Crew Classic last week, the Brown men’s crew turned in an impressive showing at Yale on Saturday morning, winning the first and second varsity eights races against the Bulldogs. Bruno’s top boat edged out Yale in one of the more exciting races of the day, crossing the line in 5:38.0 to beat the Bulldogs by about four seats.
  • Brown Finishes Second at San Diego Crew Classic; Wins Michalson Cup

    San Diego, CA – Racing against some of the top competition from around the country on Sunday afternoon, the Brown men’s crew opened its season with an impressive second place finish in the varsity eight at the San Diego Crew Classic, taking the Michalson Cup against Boston University in the process. The Bears easily took the silver, finishing well ahead of the rest of the field in 5:53.63, though they couldn’t reel in Cal, which won the event in 5:49.50.

    Providence, R.I. - Senior Nick Ritter has been a member of the Brown varsity eight for much of his career, and has helped the Bears remain competitive at the national level. Last season, Ritter was in the boat for a number of tremendous races, including winning gold at Eastern Sprints. Brown, and Ritter, also took third at the IRA National Championships, and won the prestigious Ladies Plate Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.     Providence, R.I. - Senior Gavin Crynes has been a key component of the Brown men's crew throughout his career, with highlights including an IRA silver in the freshman eight and an EARC gold and IRA silver in the second varsity eight. He has been equally impressive off the water, where he was awarded the 2009 Derek Canfield Barker Prize, given annually to students who have shown qualities of leadership, triumphed over adversity, and who have worked to bring the Brown community together through community service.   • Scott Morgan '10 and Alex Fleming '12 Tie for Third at CRASH-B's

    A number of Brown oarsmen competed at the annual CRASH-B competition in Boston over the weekend, including Alex Fleming '12 and Scott Morgan '10, who each pulled a 5:58.4 to tie for fifth overall and third in the U-23 division. A pair of international elite rowers took the top two overall spots, as Tim Grohmann of Germany came in at 5:48.7, followed by Estonia's Allar Raja in 5:50.6.
  • Scott Morgan '10 Prepares to Defend U-23 Crown at CRASH-B's

    Senior Scott Morgan, who won the U-23 title at CRASH-B's last season, will defend his mark this weekend at the annual indoor competition in Boston. Morgan pulled a 5:57.2 in 2009, taking the top spot in the collegiate division, and finishing fourth overall, behind three National Team members. This season, Morgan and the rest of the Bears will again square off against a talented field of rowers, and will look to unofficially kick off the 2010 spring season with a win.
  • Paul Cooke Named ECAC Coach of the Year

    The ECAC recently announced that Brown's Paul Cooke is the league's 2009 Coach of the Year, as selected in a vote by the ECAC's head coaches. Cooke led the Bears to an extraordinary season in 2008-09, sweeping the heavyweight events at Eastern Sprints before going on to capture third overall and fourth in the varsity eight at the IRA National Championship Regatta.
  • Men's Crew Wraps Up Fall Season With Win at Foot of the Charles

    The Bears finished the fall season in impressive fashion over the weekend, splitting up their top boats into fours for the season finale and taking first against a number of tough opponents. Brown's "A" squad raced down the course in a blistering 13:09, easily taking the top spot against Harvard and Boston University among others.
  • Men's Crew and "Pull For a Cure" Featured in Rowing News

    Last weekend at the prestigious Head of the Charles, the Brown crew went head-to-head with some of the top competition from around the world and more than held their own, finishing fifth overall. However, they may have achieved an even more significant victory off the water, as the team raised over $20,000 in less than a month to benefit breast cancer research. It is the latter feat that has gained national recognition for the crew, as they were recently featured in Rowing News.

    The Brown men’s crew turned in a terrific performance at a snowy Head of the Charles in Boston over the weekend, with the men’s crew going head-to-head with some of the top competition from around the world and more than holding its own. Racing against a number of national teams and top collegiate squads, Bruno’s varsity eight placed fifth in the Championship 8 divison, just four seconds out of second place.

    Rochester, N.Y. – The men’s crew kicked off their fall season with an impressive showing at the Head of the Genesee over the weekend, taking first and second in the varsity eight, as well as a first in the varsity four. The freshmen were in action as well, taking first place in the novice eight at the Head of the Housatonic as they easily held off a pair of Yale boats for the win.
  • Crew to "Pull for a Cure" at the Head of the Charles

    This season at the Head of the Regatta, the men's crew team will challenge themselves to not only win the race, as they very nearly did last season, but also to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer. The team will use the prestigious regatta, which attracts over 300,000 spectators annually, to attempt to raise $10,000 through their "Pull for a Cure" event.
  • Former Bear van Knotsenburg Takes Silver at World Championships

    Former Brown rower Steve van Knotsenburg and the Canadian National Team 8+ placed second at the 2009 World Championships on Sunday, rowing 5:27.15 to take the silver. With van Knotsenburg sitting bow, the Canadians jumped out to a fast start, and held second place throughout the race, holding off late charges from Poland and the Netherlands.
  • Former Brown Oarsmen Compete at World Championships

    Two former Bears were in action at the Rowing World Championships in Poland on Thursday, as Steve van Knotsenbergis qualified for the grand finals in the Canadian 8, while Nikola Stojic '97 just missed qualifying for Serbia in the straight pair.

    CAPE COD, Mass. - Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Commissioner Rudy Keeling announced today that Brown University has earned the 2009 ECAC Turfer Athletic Rowing Trophy. It is the third consecutive year that the Bears have won the ECAC Turfer Athletic Rowing Trophy.

    The Brown men’s crew celebrated the Fourth of July Holiday Weekend in England with an outstanding performance at the Henley Royal Regatta, with its varsity eight winning the Ladies Plate Challenge Cup, and the freshmen eight finishing second in the Temple Challenge Cup.
