Brown Finalizes Its 2003-2004 Men's Basketball Schedule; Seniors Jaime Kilburn and Mike Martin Named Captains

Sept. 19, 2003

Providence, RI -

Brown men's basketball coach Glen Miller, coming off a NIT post-season berth and a second place finish in the Ivy League standings, has finalized his team's 2003-2004 basketball schedule, completing the schedule with a season-opening game against Rick Barnes' Texas Longhorns in Austin Texas.

In addition, Miller announced his team captains for the 2003-2004 season, naming senior forward Jaime Kilburn (Brooklyn, NY) and senior Mike Martin (Agawam, MA) co-captains of the Bears.

Kilburn led last year's team in field goal percentage, connecting on 66 percent from the field. He shot a phenomenal 77 percent from the field in Ivy League games. His 20 consecutive field goals made during the season were five short of the NCAA record.

Kilburn, who came to Brown from Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, scored a season high 17 points against Belmont, and connected on 8 of 8 shots from the field in scoring 16 points against Yale. He averaged 7.3 ppg for the season.

Martin scored a career high 21 points against New Hampshire last season, hitting 8 of 9 shots from the field. His 38 steals ranked second on last year's squad, despite missing Brown's last four games due to injury.

Martin, a former standout at Cathedral High School, averaged 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds a game in 2002-2003 and scored in double figures six times. He has a career scoring average of 6.7 ppg.

The schedule features 11 home games at the Pizzitola Sports Center, including a December 3, 2003 match-up against the Rhode Island Rams, who also earned an NIT berth last year. Brown's other non-league home opponents include Wagner, an NCAA tournament team last year, Wright State and Central Connecticut.

The big Princeton/Penn home weekend comes early with the Bears battling the Tigers on Friday, January 30, and coming back with the Quakers on Saturday, January 31. Last year's games sold out at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

In addition, the Bears will play Ivy League home games against Yale on January 24, Cornell and Columbia on February 6 and 7, and Dartmouth and Harvard on February 27 and 28.

Miller's team will also face a tough non-league road slate, highlighted by a November 17 meeting with Texas, who is coming off an NCAA Final Four appearance. The Bears will also face defending ACC regular season champion Wake Forest on January 6 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Brown will travel to Rider on November 11 to open its 2003-2004 season and will also be on the road for the Maine Tournament (November 28-29), and against Ohio (December 6), Holy Cross (December 21), Stony Brook (December 30) and Hartford (January 4).

The Bears will be on the road for seven Ivy League contests, opening its Ivy season against Yale in New Haven on January 17. Brown will travel to Harvard and Dartmouth on February 13 and 14, Penn and Princeton on February 20 and 21, and will conclude its regular season at Columbia and Cornell on March 5 and 6.

Despite the graduation of two of the top three scorers in Brown basketball history, Brown head coach Glen Miller expects the Bears to be in the think of the Ivy League title chase once again. The Bears return three starters, including first team All-Ivy Jason Forte, who averaged 13.0 points a game and set a new school record for assists in a season (155).

Last year's team earned an NIT post-season appearance with 17 wins, tying the school-record for the second straight season, and posted a school-record 12-2 Ivy mark, including its first-season ever sweep of Princeton.
