Bears Announce 2003-2004 Team Awards

Head coach Glen Miller presented the annual Brown Men's Basketball Team Awards at a dinner held at the Barnsider Restaurant in Providence on Wednesday, May 5. Among those honored at the dinner were Brown's three seniors - Jaime Kilburn (Brooklyn, NY), Mike Martin (Agawam, MA) and Pat Powers (Stamford, CT) - the winningest class in Brown basketball history (63 wins).

The trio helped Brown to its fourth consecutive winning season (14-13) and a second place finish in the Ivy League standings for the third time in the last four years with a 10-4 league mark.

Miller and Friends of Brown Basketball president Rusty Tyler '71 gave out eight awards during the evening, including the J. Richmond Fales Trophy, presented to the Team MVP. The Fales trophy was won by Jason Forte '05 (Rockville, MD), the Ivy League's Player of the Year, who is the first player in Ivy history to lead the league in scoring (21.4 ppg) and assists (5.79 per game).

The recipients of the 2003-2004 Brown Men's Basketball Team Awards as announced by the coaching staff:

Initiated in 2004, the David J. Zucconi '55 Award, was established as a tribute to Brown's most beloved alumnus, to be presented to that team member who, through his extraordinary efforts, strength of character, and dogged determination, epitomizes Dave's selfless efforts on behalf of Brown Basketball:

Mike Martin '04, guard from Agawam, MA (Cathedral HS)

The Woody Grimshaw '47 Memorial Award is named in honor of former Brown player Woody Grimshaw '47, who was also a long-time successful basketball coach at Tufts. It is presented annually to that member of the team showing the most positive attitude and the best spirit:

The Jim Turner '86 Award is presented to the member of the team who, through hard work and dedication, has improved the most throughout the year:

The Thomas Hoagland '63 Award is presented to the member of the varsity team who exemplifies true unselfishness through commitment and hard work both on the court and in the community:

Robert Humm '04, manager of the team from Barrington, RI (Barrington HS)

The Bernard V. Buonanno, Jr. '60 Award is given to that member of the varsity team who, through dedication in the classroom and on the court, has exemplified the true meaning of the scholar-athlete:

Patrick Powers '04, guard from Stamford, CT (St. Luke's HS)

The Stan Ward Award is named in honor of former Brown head coach Stan Ward, and is given to the player who, in a quiet, unobtrusive way, contributes the most to the team:

Luke Ruscoe '06, guard from Nelson, New Zealand (Brewster, Academy)

The J. Richmond Fales Trophy is awarded to that member of the team who, through sportsmanship, performance and influence, has contributed the most to the sport at Brown:

Jason Forte '05, guard from Rockville, MD (The Heights School)

The Russell J. Tyler '71 Coaches Award goes to the member of the team who, through total dedication and loyalty, has given the most of themselves for the good of the team:
