Providence, RI - Brown's second half comeback came up short as the Bears dropped their home opener to Army, 62-54, at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Brown's Marcus Becker netted a csreer high 21 points to lead the Bears.
Trailing 25-19 at the half, Brown tied the game three times in the second half, the last time at 41-41 on two free throws by junior Keenan Jeppesen with 9:13 left in the game.
Army took the lead for good, 44-41, on a three-point basket by senior Matt Bell with 7:42 remaining to play, sparking a 7-0 Black Knight run the led to a 48-41 Army advantage with 5:16 left to play.
Jeppesen's two free throws with 3:43 remaining made it a one possession game, 48-45, but that was as close as the Bears would get down the stretch as Army connected on 11 of 12 free throws in the last 1:41 of the game.
Becker's 21 points came on7 of 9 shooting from the field and 4 of 4 shooting from the free throw line. His four rebounds also led the Bears. Jeppesen finished with 12 points and five assists.
Army junior guard Jerell Brown scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, while Bell added 13 points, all in the second half. Cory Sinning scored 10 points, hitting 8 of 8 free throws, mostly down the stretch.
The Cadets out-rebounded the Bears by a 33-18 margin and connected on 15 of 16 free throws.
Brown will be back in action again on Tuesday, traveling to Staten Island, New York to face Wagner. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
