Former Wagner and Lamar assistant basketball coach Kenyon Spears begins his first season as as assistant men’s basketball coach at Brown. Spears will have wide-ranging recruiting, scouting and on-court player development responsibilities at Brown.
A 2001 graduate of Lamar with a B.S. in Communications, Spears was a four-year letterman, a team captain as a senior, and helped the Cardinals to the NCAA Tournament in 2000 after winning the Southland Conference Tournament Championship. He scored 19 points in the NCAA Tournament game against Duke and was named the Chevrolet Player of the Game.
Spears started his collegiate coaching career at Lamar, assisting the Cardinals from 2002 – 2004. In 2005, Spears became an assistant coach at Wagner College and later became the associate head coach of the Seahawks, working under coach Mike Deane, whom he played for and coached with at Lamar.
At Wagner, the Nome, Texas, native played an integral role in coaching the Seahawks to a school record for victories (23), and best Northeast Conference winning percentage in 2007-2008. He developed two first team All-NEC performers, including the nation’s third leading rebounder.
Spears’ extensive duties at Wagner included the coordinating of recruiting visits, the development of a recruiting database, the researching of scouting services and maintaining contact with publishers. He also was instrumental in the development of Wagner’s big men as well as game and practice preparation and opponent scouting.
