Yale Outlasts Brown, 78-72, In Ivy League Opener

 New Haven, Conn. -  Yale survived a frenetic final minute of play to come away with a 78-72 win over Brown behind a game high 23 points by Trey Phills in the Ivy League opener for both teams at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.

 

Brown fell behind by as many as eight points midway through the second half, but came back to trail by three points, 73-70, on a trey by freshman Desmond Cambridge (Nashville, TN) with 58 seconds remaining.  Cambridge forced a turnover and connected on a free throw with 54 seconds left to pull Brown to within two points, 73-71.

 

Sophomore Brandon Anderson (Mahwah, NJ) took a charge for the Bears at the defensive end, giving Brown possession with 36 seconds left on the clock.  Bears' forward Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario) converted on one-of-two free throws with 26 second remaining to cut Yale's lead to 73-72.

 

The Bulldogs connected on 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

 

Brown came into the game as the Ivy League's top free throw shooting team at 76-percent, but was able to connect on just 18-of-31 free throws, shooting 58-percent for the game. Yale converted 17-of-24 free throws (71-percent).

 

The Bulldogs held a 40-27 advantage on the backboards, including an 18-8 rebounding margin in the opening half. Yale shot 50-percent from the field (28-of-56), while Brown connected on 23-of-53 field goals (43-percent).

 

Anderson paced the Bears with 22 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the field. Cambridge added 15 points, while sophomore guard Zach Hunsaker (Orem, UT) tossed in 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Brown forward Tamenang Choh (Lowell, MA) led both teams with eight rebounds.

 

Phills connected on 6-of-9 field goals and 10-of-10 free throws, while adding seven rebounds and five assists. Miye netted 17 points for the Bulldogs, while Alex Copeland had all 10 of his points in the first half.

 

After a nine-day layoff, Brown's offense had trouble getting on track, falling behind at the outset of the game by a 25-11 margin at the 10:47 mark.

 

The Bears clawed their way back in the game to trail by four points, 38-34, on an alley-oop dunk by Cambridge on a feed from Anderson with 1:12 left in the half.

 

Yale held a five-point lead at the half, 42-37, with Oni and Copeland scoring 10 points each and the Bulldogs.  Anderson led all scorers at the half with 15 points for the Bears.

 

Brown grabbed its first lead of the game, 47-46, on a trey by Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) at the 16:29 mark of the second half.

 

The Bulldogs went on a 14-5 run to go back up by eight points, 60-52, on a three-point play by Phills with 10:25 remaining.

 

The Bears and Bulldogs will match-up again in Providence, RI next Friday evening, January 19 at the Pizzitola Sports Center.  Tip-off is 8:00 pm on MyRITV and the ILN.
