The Bears, winners of seven of their last eight games, extended their record to 8-5 overall, while Maine falls to 4-9. The eight non-league wins for the Bears are the second most wins in Brown basketball history behind the nine non-league wins by Brown's 2001-02 team.
"I'm proud of the team, especially our three seniors, who led the way and didn't get down after a tough first half," said Brown head coach Mike Martin. "With 55 points in the second half, you really have to like your offense. I'm really happy that we were able to get the free throw line 36 times (27-of-36)."
With his brother, Jordan, in attendance, Spieth scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half, connecting on 6-of-12 field goals and 13-of-15 free throws, while grabbing eight rebounds.
The Bears came from 13 points down at the half (40-27) and held a 73-61 lead with 2:18 remaining after Maine's Wes Myers connected on a long trey.
Bears' sophomore forward Travis Fuller (Encinitas, CA) scored six straight points for the Bears on two free throws and two lay-ups to help Brown build a 79-71 lead with 26 second remaining, putting the game out of reach.
Fuller posted his first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Blackmon added four assists to go with his 16 points, with three treys.
Senior long-range marksman JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) tossed in 15 points with 4-of-9 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. With four treys, Hobbie moved into third place in Brown career treys with 220 trifectas, 17th best in Ivy League basketball history.
Maine was led by Andrew Fleming, who posted a double-double, with 23 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Myers netted 16 points for the Black Bears, while Austin Howard scored 14 points, connecting on 4-of-6 treys.
Brown held an early 11-7 lead, but Maine out-scored the Bears 30-11 over the next 13 minutes to grab a 37-22 advantage following a mid-range jumper by Myers with 2:29 left in the half.
The Bears trailed by 16 points in the second half, 51-35, after Maine's Marko Pirovic connected on a trey at the 16:31 mark.
Brown exploded with a 22-2 run to take a 57-53 lead on a trey by Blackmon with 9:07 remaining.
Back-to-back treys by Hobbie lifted the Bears to a 67-59 lead with 6:28 left and Fuller added a free throw for a 68-59 Brown advantage.
Brown breaks for the Christmas Holiday and returns to action on Thursday, December 29 to host Quinnipiac. Tip-off is 7:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
