Tavon Blackmon’s Layup with 3.8 Seconds Remaining Lifts Brown Over Bryant, 91-90

Providence, R.I. -  Trailing by one point with 12 seconds remaining, Brown senior guard  Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD) drove the length of the court to score on a layup with 3.8 seconds remaining to lift the Bears (3-4) to a 91-90 win over Bryant (2-5) at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

With 22.9 seconds remaining, Brown clung to an 89-87 lead, with the Bulldogs inbounding the ball in front of their own bench. Bryant's Nisre Zouzoua knocked down a step-back trey to give the Bulldogs a 90-89 lead with 12 seconds remaining.

The Bears chose not to call timeout and allow Blackmon, their floor leader, to make a decision in the waning moments.  Blackmon took the inbounds pass, weaved his way down the court and scored on an uncontested layup to give Brown the win with 3.8 ticks left on the clock.  Bryant was unable to get off a final shot as time expired with the ball at midcourt.

"It's always better to let the players play at the end without a timeout," said Brown head coach Mike Martin.  "Tavon did what he does best. He's our leader and the guy we feed off. I trust him to make the right play."

Blackmon finished the game with nine points and eight assists as four Brown players scored in double figures.

Bears' freshman Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) led all Brown scorers with 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Senior Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) handed out a career high nine assists, while scoring 16 points for the Bears.

Brown had 35 points off the bench, led by senior JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ), who scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the three-point arc, and sophomore Travis Fuller (Encinitas, CA), who added 11 points. Sophomore Corey Daugherty (Barrington, RI) netted nine points, all on treys.

Zouzoua turned in a virtuoso performance, scoring 31 points for the Bulldogs on 8-of-20 shooting from the field and 10-of-11 shooting from the free throw line.  Adam Grant scored 16 points for Bryant and Bosko Lostur added 16 points.

Brown built an early 16-7 lead following three free throws by Daugherty at the 12:48 mark of the opening half, and extended its lead to 18-8 on a basket by sophomore Obi Okolie (Ajax, Ontario).

A 15-5 run by the Bulldogs cut Brown's lead to one point, 33-32, on an Adam Grant jump shot.

Leading 43-39 at the half, Brown extended its lead to 50-41 on a trey by Daugherty at the 18:14 mark.

Bryant came roaring back and took its first lead, 54-52, on a conventional three-point play by Zouzoua.

Holding an 85-83 lead with 3:44 remaining, Spieth hit consecutive layups to build an 89-83 lead for the Bears with 2:47 left in the game.

Bryant baskets by Ikenna Ndugba and Marcel Pettway with 1:02 left cut the Brown lead to 89-87.

Brown is back in action again on Wednesday, November 30, hosting the Terriers of St. Francis Brooklyn.  Tip-off is 7:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
