Providence, R.I. - Freshman forward Joshua Howard (Charlotte, NC) scored a career high 20 points and senior Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD) netted 20 points to rally Brown (2-4) from a 12 point second half deficit and earn a 81-75 win over Morgan State (2-3) at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
"I'm proud of the way we stayed with it after playing ugly for a long time," said Brown head coach Mike Martin, whose team overcame 19 turnovers. "Our guys showed a lot of emotion when we were down by 10 at the under-12 minute timeout and cut the deficit to two points by the next media timeout."
Howard found the seam in the Morgan State zone and scored most of his points 20 in the paint, connecting on 8-of-11 field goals. He also pulled down six rebounds.
Blackmon finally got his outside game going for Brown, hitting 4-of-4 treys and 4-of-4 free throws. With six assists, he moved into fifth place in all-time Brown assists, now with 380 career assists.
"I'm really proud of the way Tavon has bounced back because I've seen how good he can be," said Martin. "He played with a pop in his step and the energy our entire teams feeds off."
Brown senior Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX), the Ivy League's leading scorer, turned in a typical Spieth performance, taking a run at a triple-double once again with 15 points, nine rebounds and eight assists.
Bears' senior marksman JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) was also a factor in the game with nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
Morgan State was paced by Phillip Carr, who had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Kyle Thomas, who netted 16 points.
Brown opened up a 20-12 advantage on a Howard layup at the 12-minute mark of the opening half. The eight point Brown edge evaporated on a 14-0 Morgan State run that led to a 26-20 lead by the visitors.
A 8-0 run by Brown led to a 28-26 lead following two free throws by sophomore Corey Daugherty (Barrington, RI) with 2:34 remaining in the half.
Morgan State out-scored Brown 8-2 to end the half and grab a 34-30 lead at intermission.
The opening of the second half was all Morgan State with the visitors building a 54-42 lead with 12:09 remaining on a dunk by Phillip Carr.
Undaunted, Brown got back in the game with a 10-0 over the next 1:45 to cut the Morgan State lead to 54-52 on a trey by Hobbie.
Daugherty's trey tied the game, 64-64, with 6:18 remaining with a trey.
Hobbie nailed a trey with 2:07 left to give Brown its first lead since midway through the first half, 72-71.
A three-point play by Howard with 50 seconds remaining put the Bears in the lead by a 77-73 margin, and Blackmon's two free throws with 26 second left put Brown up 79-73.
A coast-to-coast layup by Morgan State's Martez Cameron cut Brown's lead to 79-75, but Blackmon put the game out of reach with two free throws with 17 seconds left.
Brown returns to the hardwood after Thanksgiving, hosting intra state rival Bryant on Monday, November 28. Tip-off is 7:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
