Uncasville, Conn. - Brown completed play in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-off Tournament, held at the Mohegan Sun Arena, falling to Albany, 80-76, despite a furious rally in the game's final minutes. Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) paced the Bears with a game high 25 points.
The Bears fell behind by 14 points in the second half, 64-50, but clawed back with defensive pressure. Trailing 71-65, senior Tavon Blackmon's (Upper Marlboro, MD) three-point play cut Albany's lead to 71-67 with 2:00 left. Spieth scored on a driving layup and the Bears trailed, 71-69, with 1:20 remaining.
Joe Cremo put Albany up, 76-71, with two free throws, but sophomore Obi Okolie's (Ajax, Ontario) layup made it 76-73 with 17 seconds remaining. Cremo hit two more free throws for a 78-73 lead, but Okolie drained a trey to make it 78-76 with 4.9 seconds remaining.
Albany's Marqueese Grayson put the game out of reach with 4.2 seconds remaining with two free throws.
Spieth scored 15 of his game high 25 points in the first half to help the Bears build a nine-point lead, 39-30. He connected on 6-of-10 field goals overall and 10-of-10 free throws, while pacing the Bears with seven rebounds.
Okoli netted 11 of his 17 points in the second half, while Blackmon posted 12 points.
Freshman Joshua Howard's (Charlotte, NC) added nine points for the Bears.
Four Albany players scored in double figures, led by Grayson, who netted 21 points. Cremo's 18 points were highlighted by 10-of-10 shooting from the free throw line, while Greig Stire chipped in with 14 points and David Nichols 12 points for the Great Danes.
The Bears were cold from the field at the outset of the game, connecting on just one of their first nine field goals in falling behind 11-3 in the first five minutes.
The Bears kept up the pressure on the Great Danes with a half court trap defense and took the lead, 20-19, on a Spieth trey at the 8:11 mark, and built a 26-19 advantage following two Spieth free throws with 5:56 left.
Brown's biggest lead of the half came when Spieth hit two more free throws just before the end of the half for a 39-30 lead at intermission.
Howard's layup with just under 16 minutes remaining put the Bears up by 11 points, 47-36.
The Great Danes got back into the game with an 8-0 run to cut Brown's lead to 47-44 following a Nichols trey with 14 minutes left.
Albany took its first lead of the half, 49-48, on two free throws by Cremo and extended its lead to 64-50 on a layup by Nichols with 7:30 remaining to take control of the game and complete a 28-3 run.
Brown returns home on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday, November 23, for a matinee matchup against Morgan State. Tip-off is 4:00 pm at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
