Rhode Island Tops Brown, 88-85, In Overtime; Kuakumensah Ties Brown Blocks Record

Providence, R.I. - Four McGlynn scored six of his game high 33 points in overtime to lead Rhode Island to an 88-85 overtime win over Brown in front of a capacity crowd at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Bears fall to 4-8 overall, while Rhode Island extends its record to 8-5.


All five Brown starters scored in double figures, led senior forward Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA), who tied the school record for blocks in a game with seven, while scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds.


In overtime, McGlynn's running one-hander broke an 81-81 tie and gave the Rams an 83-81 advantage with 43 seconds remaining. Berry hit a free throw for the Rams to go up by three points, 84-81.


Brown junior forward Steven Spieth (Dallas, TX) cut the URI lead to one point, 84-83, by connecting on two free throws with 19 seconds left to play. McGlynn's two free throws put URI back up by three points, 86-83.


A tip in by sophomore guard Jason Massey (Cooper City, FL) with three seconds left again cut the URI lead to one point, 86-85, but McGlynn answered once again with two free throws for the final score.


Brown trailed 69-66 in regulation and went back on top, 70-69, on two free throws by Kuakumensah.  Jarvis Garrett scored for the Rams to put URI up, 71-70, with 1:40 remaining, but Kuakumensah's lay-up with 1:24 remaining put the Bears back in the lead, 72-71.


A long trey by McGlynn from the corner put the Rams up by a 74-72 margin with 55 seconds left.


Junior guard Tavon Blackmon's (Upper Marlboro, MD) two free throws tied the game for the Bears, 74-74, with 49 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.


Spieth posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.  Massey scored 15 points and six rebounds, while Blackmon had 14 points and eight assists. Junior JR Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) netted 14 points for the Bears.


McGlynn's 33 points came on 10-of-21 shooting from the floor. Thompson scored 13 points for the Rams, while Jared Terrell added 11 points.


Brown jumped out to an early nine point lead, 13-4, following a trey by Hobbie with 14:13 left in the opening half.  URI battled back to take its first lead, 22-20 with 7:21 remaining on a lay-up by Terrell.


Undaunted, Brown outscored the Rams, 7-2, in the final 1:06 of the half, capped off by a trey by Massey, to take a 37-30 lead at intermission.


The Bears sprinted to a 12-point lead to open the half, 51-39, after a baseline jump shot by Kuakumensah at the 15:24 mark.


Hobbie's lay-up with 11:40 left in the game lifted the Bears to a 60-45 advantage.


URI slowly chipped away at the Brown lead and took its first lead, 69-66, on a long trey by McGlynn with 4:07 left in the half.


Brown hits the road for its first game of 2016, traveling to Bangor, Maine to face the University of Maine on Saturday, January 2.  Tip-off is 2:00 pm at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.
