Friars Take Down Bears, 94-73

Providence, R.I. - After dropping two of the last three games to the Bears, Providence (3-0) came to play in the 122nd meeting between the two city schools and earned a 94-73 win over Brown (1-3) before a crowd of 8,706 at the Dunkin Donuts Center.

 

Both sophomore Jason Massey (Cooper City, FL) and freshman forward Travis Fuller (Encinitas, CA) registered career scoring highs for the Bears. Massey netted 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field.  Fuller also scored 12 points, hitting all four of his shots from the field, while pulling down a team high six rebounds.

 

Bears' junior guard Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD) also scored in double figures, chipping in with 11 points and four assists, while Justin Massey (Cooper City, FL) added nine points. Freshman Chris Sullivan (Wilmette, IL) netted a career best five points, hitting both of his shots from the field.

 

Rodney Bullock paced the five Friars' double figure scorers with a double-double, scoring 24 points on sizzling 9-of-12 shooting from the field, while grabbing a game high 10 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Fazekas provided the outside game, scoring 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, including 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc.

 

Providence had the advantage on the glass, out-rebounding the Bears by a 41-29 margin.  The Friars also shot 57-percent from the field (33-of-58), while Brown shot 45-percent (25-of-56).

 

The Massey brothers, Justin and Jason, gave the Bears an early 11-8 lead, with Jason hitting two treys and Justin another at the three minute mark.

 

Providence methodically took control of the game with an 18-5 spurt to lead, 26-16, with 10:24 remaining on a dunk by Rodney Bullock.

 

The Bears drew to within five points, 39-34, on a driving layup by Blackmon with three minutes to play in the half, before trailing 45-35 at intermission.

 

A 13-3 Providence spurt to open the second half, sparked by Jalen Lindsey's five points, put the Friars in control, 58-38, lead with 16:49 left to play.

 

Brown continues its non-league schedule at home against New Hampshire on Tuesday, November 24 at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Tip-off is 7:00 pm.
