Providence, R.I. - Brown junior forward Rafael Maia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District Men's Basketball Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). His name will be placed on the national ballot for Academic All-American consideration.
A Business concentrator with a 3.71 grade point average, Maia was the Ivy League's top rebounder a year ago with 7.5 per game, and is averaging 8.4 rebounds per game this season to rank second in the Ivy League. He has led the Bears in rebounding in nine of 14 games this season.
Maia has posted three double-doubles this season and recently posted his sixth career double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Yale. He grabbed a season high 14 rebounds against UMass-Lowell, and has scored 16 points three times in games vs. Sacred Heart, Bryant and Yale.
A strong inside presence for the Bears, his 51-percent shooting from the field (55-of-109) is seventh in the Ivy League. He is also averaging 10.3 points per game for the Bears.
The rugged Brazilian played for his country at this summer's World University Games in Russia, and was named the Ivy League's best rebounder by Lindy's Sports Annuals. He is also a nominee for the Allstate Good Works Team for his volunteer and civic service.
