McGonagill, Maia and Kuakumensah Named Brown Basketball Captains
Providence, R.I. - As the Brown men' basketball team tipped-off its pre-season practice schedule, coach Mike Martin announced that senior Sean McGonagill (Brookfield, IL), junior Rafael Maia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and sophomore Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA) have been named tri-captains for the 2013-2014 season.
"These three young men have earned the respect of their teammates through their hard work, positive attitude, and leadership qualities," said Martin. "Our program is working hard to continue our improvement and Sean, Rafa, and Cedric lead from the front in that regard. We will rely heavily upon their leadership this year with such a young roster."
A first team All-Ivy selection, McGonagill was the Ivy League's fourth leading scorer with 14.0 points per game and also ranked fourth in the league in assists. His 1,113 career points in three years at Brown are 19th best in Brown history, while his 413 career assists rank third in the Brown record book.
Kuakumensah, who was the Ivy League's Defensive Player of the Year, turned into the premier defensive player in the Ivy League by blocking a Brown record 66 shots, a mark that ranked sixth in Ivy League history, and was the most ever by a first-year player. He led the Ivy League with 2.4 blocks per game, and scored a season high 19 points against Cornell.
Maia led the Ivy League in rebounding last season with 7.5 rebounds per game. He pulled down a career high 15 rebounds against both Sacred Heart and URI and averaged 10.5 points per game for the season. Maia registered two double-doubles, including a 22 point, 13 rebound performance at Cornell.
