Providence, Rhode Island - Junior forward Andrew McCarthy scored 13 points and grabbed a career high 14 rebounds, and sophomore guard Sean McGonagill netted a team high 16 points, to rally Brown to a 59-52 win over Hartford at the Pizzitola Sports Center. The win evens Brown's record at 2-2, while Hartford falls to 0-4 on the young season.
McGonagill scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, as the Bears rallied from a 22-17 halftime deficit. He connected on 5 of 11 field goals, including 4 of 6 from behind the three-point arc, while grabbing six rebounds.
McCarthy gave the Bears an inside presence, with his 13 points coming on 5 of 12 shooting from the field. Junior Matt Sullivan, sophomore Steve Albrecht and senior Jean Harris chipped in with eight points each.
McCarthy helped the Bears to a decided edge on the backboards, with Brown out-rebounding the Hawks by a 40-26 margin.
Brown trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, 20-9, following a lay-up by Hartford's Corban Wroe with 5:58 left in the half. The Bears out-scored the Hawks 8-2 for the remainder of the half to trail at the break, 22-17.
McGonagill gave Brown its first lead of the second half, 38-35, when he knocked down a trey with 10:22 left in the game. Hartford tied the game a short time later, 40-40, on a trey by Andrew Torres.
Coach Jesse Agel's team went on a 9-0 run, taking the lead for good, 43-40, on three free throws by junior Matt Sullivan with 7:40 remaining, and extending the lead to nine points, 49-40, on a conventional three-point play by McCarthy.
The Hawks drew to within one point, 53-52 with 2:56 left on a lay-up by Yolonzo Moore.
Brown iced the game by connecting on 6 of 6 free throws in the game's last 1:23, two each by Sullivan, McCarthy and McGonagill.
Hartford's Nate Sikma led all scorers with 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field, while Moore also scored in double figures with 10 points.
