McGonagill’s 20 Points Leads Brown Over Johnson & Wales, 86-66, In Season Opener

Providence, Rhode Island – Sophomore point guard Sean McGonagill registered a double-double with 22 points and 10 assists to help Brown open its 106th season of intercollegiate basketball with an 86-66 win over Johnson & Wales Friday evening at the Pizzitola Sports Center.


The win over the Wildcats gives the Bears a tune-up before traveling to Syracuse, New York to compete in the NIT Season Tip –off at the Carrier Dome, November 14-15.  The Bears face Albany at 4:00 p.m. on Monday (11/14), while #8 Syracuse battles Manhattan at 7:00 p.m.


McGonagill's 22 points came on 7 of 12 shooting from the field. He also grabbed six rebounds and made three steals  Bears' forward junior Tyler Ponticelli scored a career high 17 points on 6 of 7 shooting from the field, while grabbing seven rebounds and registering six assists.  Senior Jean Harris played well defensively and also scored in double figures for the Bears with 11 points.


Brown led from start-to-finish and opened an early 21-11 lead on a lay-up by sophomore Dockery Walker with 11:30 remaining in the first half.


McGonagill, last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year, gave Brown a 46-31 at intermission on two free throws with 55 seconds left in the half.


It was more of the same in the second half with Brown grabbing its biggest lead, 80-58, on a lay-up by junior Andrew McCarthy with 3:10 left in the game.


Johnson & Wales was led by Lamont Thomas, who scored 26 points on 12 of 12 shooting from the free throw line, 6 of 20 from the field,  and pulled down 9 rebounds.  Curtis Lucas chipped in with 10 points for the Wildcats.
