Brown Off To Best Start In 10 Years With 67-63 Win Over St. Francis

Providence, Rhode Island -  Brown built a 15-point halftime lead and withstood a strong second half rally by St. Francis to earn a 67-63 win over the Terriers at the Pizzitola Sports Center.  Bears' sophomore Tucker Halpern scored a team high 15 points, including two free throws with five seconds remaining to put the game away, and extend Brown's record to 3-1, its best start in 10 years.

St. Francis chopped away at Brown's 15-point halftime advantage and pulled to within one point, 59-58, with 1:16 left in the game following a long trey by Justin Newton.

Brown freshman Sean McGonagill connected on three of four free throws over the next 21 seconds to give the Bears a 62-58 advantage.    After a lay-up by the Terriers' Stefan Perunicic with 33 seconds left cut the Brown lead to two points, McGonagill grabbed a rebound, was fouled, and connected on two more free throws to extend the Bears lead to 65-60 with 17 seconds left on the clock.

Ricky Cadell hit a trey for the Terriers with six seconds left to pull to within 66-63, but Halpern's two free throws with five seconds left put the game out of reach.

Halpern had three rebounds and two assists to go with his 15 points for Brown.  McGonagill finished with 11 points, four assists and six rebounds, while senior Garrett Leffelman also scored in double figures with 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field.  Sophomore Andrew McCarthy netted eight points and grabbed a game high 8 rebounds for the Bears.

Cadell's 19 points for St. Francis led all scorers.  Akeem Bennett (15 points) and Dre Calloway (10 points) also scored in double figures for the Terriers.

The Bears jumped out to an early 12-point lead, 18-6, following a three-point basket by senior Adrian Williams with 12:31 left in the first half.  Brown's biggest lead came at the half, 38-23, after five straight points by sophomore Matt Sullivan, the last a bucket with three seconds remaining.

Brown shot 55 percent from the field (23-42) compared to 43 percent shooting for the Terriers (24-56).  Brown out-rebounded St. Francis by a 30-27 margin.

Brown travels to Durham, New Hampshire to face the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, November 27.  Game time is 1:00 p.m. at Ludholm Gymnasium.
