Yale Avoids Sweep, Tops Bears, 71-63

Providence, Rhode Island - Yale senior guard Alex Zampier scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 71-63 win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center, and gain a split of the season series with the Bears. Both Brown and Yale are 7-12 overall, 1-1 in the Ivy League.

Brown senior Matt Mullery did all he could to keep the Bears close, scoring 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting from the field, and grabbing nine rebounds. Bears junior guard Garrett Leffelman tossed in a career high 15 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field, including 3 of 4 from behind the three-point arc.

Trailing by 10 points at the half, 37-27, the Bears came roaring back in the second half and pulled to within one point of the Elis, 55-54, with 6:55 remaining on a lay-up by Mullery.

Yale pulled ahead by six points, 66-60, with 1:12 left on a Zampier 15-foot jump shot. Brown answered immediately on a three-point play by Mullery to pull to within three points, 66-63, with 53 seconds remaining. But the Elis finished strong by scoring the game’s last five points to nail down the win.

The cold-shooting Bears fell behind early, 12-2, after connecting on just one of their first seven field goals. While the Bears shooting improved slightly in the first half, Brown still trailed by 10 points at the half, 37-27. Brown’s Mullery and Yale’s Greg Mangano each had 10 points at intermission.

Freshman Tucker Halpern scored just six points for the Bears, but grabbed 10 defensive rebounds, while handing out three assists.

Zampier’s 22 points came on 7 of 15 shooting from the field, while he added four steals. Mangano finished with 12 points and a game high

Brown continues its home stand next weekend, getting into the thick of Ivy League action by hosting Princeton and Penn on Friday and Saturday, January 29 & 30, at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Both games start at 7:00 p.m.
