Stern Hurls Gem, Stops Penn 2-1
(Apr. 7, 2001) -- The Brown baseball team got a complete-game effort from starter Jonathan Stern, who went the distance and scattered five hits, striking out three and allowing a single unearned run, as the Bears downed Penn 2-1.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Stern settled down, allowing just four baserunners the rest of the way. The Bears came back, scoring two runs in the fourth take the 2-1 lead, and from there out, Stern held off Penn.
In the critical fourth inning rally, Todd Iarussi singled and advanced to second on a throwing error to second baseman Nick Italiano with one out. Iarussi then stole third and tied the game on a wild pitch. On the next pitch, Shaun Gallagher hit a towing triple off the right field fence, and he was plated by an RBI single from Greg Metzger.
For the game, Metzger went 2-3, while Dan Kantrovitz, Iarussi, and Gallagher each went 1-3, Kantrovitz extending his hitting streak to 13 games.
