The VMI Keydets struck for two runs in the second and four runs in the third to take a 7-3 win over the Brown Bears on Wednesday afternoon. The loss dropped the Bears to 4-9 on the season.
After Brown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a homer by junior Greg Metzger, VMI picked up two runs in the home half of the inning off starter Frank Philbrick, despite getting only a single hit. Brown tied the game at two in the top of the third, as Todd Iarussi knocked home Bobby Deeb, who had walked with one out.
VMI broke the game open in the third, though, scoring four runs off Philbrick as they knocked four hits in the inning. Brown’s offense managed just a single run more on a home run by Rick Lynn.
Philbrick went 3 innings and gave up six hits and six runs, all earned. Senior Jim Johnson came out of the bullpen for Brown and worked the final three innings, allowing just a single run on four hits, while striking out four.
The Bears face the University of Virginia on Thursday.
