The Brown baseball team was swept by the Duke Blue Devils in a doubleheader played Sunday at Duke's Jack Coombs Stadium, as the host Blue Devils managed wins by 8-5 and 3-2 scores.
In the first game, the Blue Devils broke open a 1-1 game with two runs in the bottom of the third and another run in the sixth before a four-run eighth put the Bears away. Starter Jonathan Stern went seven innings on the hill for the Bears, giving up only six hits and striking out eight while the Brown defense made three errors.
Offensively, senior Dan Kantrovitz went 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while senior Todd Iarussi and junior John Cappello each added a pair of hits. Five different Bears accounted for Brown's five runs as the Bears pounded 12 hits in the first game.
Brown's Jim Johnson got the call in the second game, but despite holding Duke to only seven hits, the Devils squeezed out a 3-2 win, taking the victory in the final at-bat of the game.
Duke took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Brown countered with single runs in the third and fourth take a 2-1 lead. In the third, Shaun Gallagher drove in Kantrovitz with an RBI single, and after Greg Metzger was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out, Duke's Justin Dilucchio got Matt Kutler to hit into a fielders choice to cut down the lead runner at home. Cappello then hit into a 4-6-3 double play to stymie the Brown rally.
Johnson made the one-run lead hold up until the fifth, when Duke tied the game on a pair of hits. With the score knotted at two in the seventh, Johnson fanned Kevin Kelley before walking J.D. Alleva. Brown went to the bullpen, bringing in Cappello, who walked a batter before allowing the game-winning RBI single, giving Duke the walk-off, 3-2 win.
The Bears, now 3-7 overall, face Liberty on Monday, March 26.
