Philbrick, Bears Down Blue Devils, 5-1

The Brown baseball team, behind the strong pitching of senior Frank Philbrick, downed the Duke Blue Devils 5-1 on Saturday night.

Philbrick went the distance on the mound, scattering five hits and allowing just a single earned run in nine innings of work. Picking up his first win of the year, Philbrick fanned eight Duke batters for his first career complete game.

Brown got on the board first, taking a 3-0 lead in the third inning. After Bobby Deeb and Rick Lynn singled with one out, senior Dan Kantrovitz plated Deeb with a single, and then Lynn scored on an error by the centerfielder. After Todd Iarussi struck out, Shaun Gallagher singled and stole second. Unfortunately for Duke, the catcher’s throw flew into centerfield, and Kantrovitz scampered home with the Bears’ third run.

Brown increased its lead to 4-0 in the fifth on three more Duke errors. Bobby Deeb singled and stole second, and then reached third on an error by the shortstop. Kantrovitz came through once again for Brown, driving Deeb home.

The Deeb/Kantrovitz tandem struck again in the seventh, with Kantrovitz driving Deeb in after the latter singled and advanced to second on a Lynn single.

The Bears face Duke in a doubleheader on Sunday.
