Providence, R.I. - Brown baseball coach Marek Drabinski has announced that senior Matt Nuzzo (Everett, MA) and junior Will Weidig (Katy, TX) will serve as captains for the upcoming 2009 season. Both players have been consistent contributors since their arrival to the team, and will be integral parts of the Bears' success this season.
Nuzzo, who is expected to start at shortstop for Brown, is a two-time all-Ivy League selection, earning postseason honors in each of the last two seasons. Last season, Nuzzo led the Bears in home runs and runs batted in, with six and 40 respectively, finishing third in the Ivy League in the latter category. In Ivy play, Nuzzo was also second with seven doubles and fifth with 17 RBIs. He hit .298 on the year, with a team-high 12 doubles, and has started 92 consecutive games over the past two seasons.
Weidig, a right handed pitcher, is coming off an impressive summer playing in the Cape Cod League, and appears poised for a breakout season with the Bears. Last season, Weidig led the team with a 4.93 ERA, going 4-4 in eight starts. He was also first on the team with two complete games, and tied for the lead with a shutout. Pitching a staff-high 49.1 innings, Weidig gave up only 27 earned runs, and allowed opposing batters a slim .264 average.
The Bears will open their season on February 27, when they travel to take on Florida International in Conway, South Carolina.
