PROVIDENCE, RI - Senior pitcher John Cappello (Cranston, RI) (3-1) picked up his third victory of the season as the Brown baseball team defeated Dartmouth 5-4 in the nightcap to earn a doubleheader split with the Big Green on Sunday afternoon. The Bears fell 13-8 in a back and forth battle in game one.
Cappello scattered seven hits over seven and two thirds innings as he allowed just three earned runs while striking out six. Junior Dan Spring (Washington, D.C.) came on in the eighth inning and held Dartmouth (13-17, 4-8 Ivy) scoreless to earn his second save of the season.
Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) went two-for-four with a homerun, a triple and two RBI to pace the Bears in game two. Deeb also went two-for-four with a solo homer in the first game.
Seniors Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) (3-4, two doubles) and Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) (2-4, double) also had strong games offensively for the Bears in the nightcap.
Game one saw two ties and six lead changes over the course of seven innings. The score stood tied 4-4 after three innings and 7-7 at the end of five. Brown plated a run in the bottom of the sixth on Deeb's homer to move out in front 8-7, but the crushing blow came when Dartmouth answered with six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 13-8 advantage.
