PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown baseball team improved its Ivy League record to 7-3 by sweeping both ends of a doubleheader from the Dartmouth Big Green on Saturday afternoon at Aldrich-Dexter Field. The Bears (19-16, 7-3 Ivy) won the first game of the day 9-3 before earning an 11-2 victory in the nightcap.
Senior right-hander Jon Stern (Long Valley, NJ) (6-2) picked up his sixth victory of the season in game one as he held the Big Green to three runs on six hits while striking out six in a commanding seven-inning complete game performance.
Sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) continued his offensive surge in game one as he went three-for-three with an RBI triple. Kutler also went three-for-five with two doubles and four RBI in the second game to finish the day six-for-eight with five RBI.
Senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) (2-3), and freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) (2-3, RBI) also turned in strong offensive performances in game one.
In game two, the Bears received great pitching for the second time of the afternoon. Senior Jamie Grillo (Bellingham, MA) (3-2) threw a five-hit complete game, holding the Big Green to just two runs while striking out four over nine strong innings of work.
Metzger led the charge in the second game as he went two-for five with three RBI including his seventh homerun of the season, a two-run shot to deep left-center field in the seventh. Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) (2-4), Nichols (2-3, two RBI) and sophomore John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) (2-4) helped pace the Bears offensively.
The Bears, who still remain tied with Harvard atop the Ivy's Red Rolfe Division after Saturday's action, will battle the Big Green (12-16, 3-7 Ivy) in another doubleheader on Sunday, April 21 beginning at noon.
