PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Brown baseball team swept two games from Pace and Army on Thursday afternoon, defeating the Setters 5-0 in game one before downing the Black Knights 8-1 in game two.
Sophomore Sam Jennings (New Ashford, MA) and junior Justin Lebowitz (Aberdeen, NJ) combined to throw a four-hit shutout against Pace in the first game of the day. Jennings (2-3) started on the hill and picked up the victory for the Bears as he went four innings giving up three hits while striking out three. Lebowitz earned his first save of the season allowing one hit and striking out one over three innings of work.
Offensively the Bears were led by Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) who went 2 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs. The triple, Kutler's eighth of the season, established a new Brown record for triples in a season. Kutler also became the Brown career leader in triples on Thursday by raising his overall total with the Bears to 12.
Freshman Cameron Mitchell (Lincoln, RI) (Athens Drive HS/Raleigh, NC) went 2 for 3, sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) went 1 for 4 with a double and freshman James Lowe (Asheboro, NC) went 1 for 2 with a two-run single.
In game two, the Bears got strong pitching from freshman Eli Friedman (2-2) (Pittsburgh, PA) who earned his second win of the season by going five innings and holding Army to two hits while striking out four.
Fellow freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) went 2 for 4 to lead the Brown offensive attack. Kutler and freshman Chris Contrino (Marlboro, NJ) each went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Deeb extended his hitting streak to eight games as he went 1 for 3 with an RBI in game two.
The Bears (17-16, 5-3 Ivy) have now won four games in a row and will return to action on Saturday, April 20 for a doubleheader with Rolfe Division foe Dartmouth at Aldrich-Dexter Field beginning at noon.
