Brown Picks Up Split at Dartmouth
April 12, 2009
Hanover, N.H. - The Bears earned a split in the second doubleheader of the weekend against Dartmouth, outscoring the Big Green 9-1 over the final six innings of the second game for a comeback win. Sophomore Pete Greskoff (Paoli, PA) led Bruno at the plate, hitting a triple and two home runs to go with four RBI's. After the action, Brown's record stands at 13-15-1 overall, and 8-4 in league play.
The first game featured impressive hitting from both sides, as the teams combined for 23 runs in just seven innings. Dartmouth struck first, scoring five runs over the first two innings, but Brown answered with a huge third, putting up seven runs of their own. The Bears kicked off the inning with three consecutive hits, including an RBI double down the third base line from Greskoff. After four more runs came across, including two on a Big Green error, senior Steve Daniels (Fox Point, WI) put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to right center, giving the Bears a 7-5 lead early.
Though Dartmouth was able to chip back into the lead in the fifth, closing to within 7-6, Brown looked to be in control after adding two runs to the lead in the top of the sixth, courtesy of an RBI single from senior Dan Shapiro (Basking Ridge, N.J.). However, the Big Green came storming back in the bottom of the frame, scoring eight runs to take a 14-9 lead heading into the seventh. Though the Bears had one final shot after the swift swing in momentum, they were unable to mount another comeback, and Dartmouth held on for the win.
Both teams came out hot in the rematch, scoring three runs apiece in the first inning. Brown did so in particularly dramatic fashion, as the first two batters singled to set up senior captain Matt Nuzzo (Everett, MA), who responded with a three-run homer to left field. Once again, however, Dartmouth proved to be a tough opponent, as the Big Green scored three of their own in the bottom of the frame, and added five more over the next two innings to take a commanding 8-3 lead.
The Bears proved that they could come back as well though, scoring at least one run in each of the next four innings to regain the lead at 9-8 after the top of the seventh. Brown came up with several big hits during the rally, including a triple and a home run from Greskoff. Though Dartmouth came up with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame, both sides were scoreless in the eighth, giving the Bears a chance to take the game in the ninth.
After a lead-off single from Nuzzo, Greskoff came up big once again, sending a two-run home run to right center field to push the Bears back in front. Brown then added another run in the frame before junior Rob Wilcox (Columbia, S.C.) shut down Dartmouth in the bottom of the inning, capping off 2.2 scoreless innings for the righty and giving Brown the 12-9 win.
The Bears will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host Marist at Murray Stadium in a non-league doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
