Providence, RI - The Brown baseball team had its six-game winning streak snapped as the Rhode Island Rams took a 5-4 win at Aldrich Field on Wednesday. The Rams scored the winning run in the seventh inning, handing the Bears their first loss at home this season. The two teams were scheduled to play a second game but after just four innings, it was called due to darkness.
An RBI single by sophomore Jeff Dietz gave Brown a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but the Rams struck for three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead. The Bears evened up the score in the bottom of the fifth, getting two runs off two hits and one error. A double to left center scored one run while freshman Rob Papenhause, who reached on a single to right field, scored on a wild pitch.
A lead-off double by the Rams in the sixth followed by a double down the leftfield line, brought in the go-ahead run but Brown answered right back with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Danny Hughes looped a single to leftfield while sophomore Brian Kelaher sent one through the left side, advancing Hughes to second. Sophomore Jeff Dietz then poked one through the same spot, scoring Larson, who reached on an error.
The Rams scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh off a double to right center. Senior Ethan Burton suffered the loss on the mound, pitching five solid innings. He allowed just two runs, one earned. Junior Robert Dykehouse earned the start, pitching two innings. Kelaher and Dietz each led Brown with two hits as the Bears totaled ten to the Rams eight.
Brown will host its Red Rolfe Division opener this weekend, taking on Dartmouth in a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
