DURHAM, NC - The Brown baseball team split a doubleheader with the Duke Blue Devils on March 29. The Bears picked up a 10-9 victory in the first game before being edged 17-16 in 10 innings in game two.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Sam Jennings (1-3) (New Ashford, MA) picked up his first win of the season for the Bears as he went four and two-thirds innings of relief for starter John Cappello (Cranston, RI). Jennings gave up four earned runs on five hits while striking out three batters.
Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) led the hitting attack for Brown as he went 3 for 5 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Freshman James Lowe (Asheboro, NC) went 2 for 5 with a two-run homer and sophomore John Magaletti (Scarsdale, NY) went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer. Senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) also smacked a homerun for the Bears.
In an extra-inning contest in game two, senior pitcher Jamie Grillo (Bellingham, MA) went nine innings for the Bears and struck out four batters. Freshman Eli Friedman (1-2) (Pittsburgh, PA) took the loss on the hill for Brown.
The score was knotted 12-12 after seven full innings of play and 14-14 after eight innings.
Sophomore Matt Kutler (Omaha, NE) had a strong game offensively for the Bears as he went 3 for 6 with a three-run homer. Senior Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA) went 2 for 6 with a homerun and three RBIs, freshman Cameron Mitchell (Lincoln, RI) (Athens Drive HS/Raleigh, NC) was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and senior Greg Metzger (Trumbull, CT) went 2 for 5 with three RBIs.
After splitting the doubleheader, the Bears record fell to 7-10 on the season.
