Lexington, VA - On the strength of 13 hits, the Brown baseball team recorded a 7-3 victory over VMI on Monday. In game two of the doubleheader, the Keydets came away with a 10-5 victory with 13 hits of their own. The Bears finish the four-game series 1-4 as they are now 3-8 on the season. The win today was the continuation of a suspended game from yesterday.
In game one, Brown came out swinging in the opening frame, recording two runs on two hits. A triple by junior Jeff Nichols scored both runs. The Bears tacked on another run in the third as junior Bobby Wiginton, who led-off the inning with a double, scored on a wild pitch.
After holding VMI scoreless for three innings, the Keydets broke out for two runs in the fourth to cut the lead to one, 3-2. However, Brown quickly regained a two-run lead when senior Bobby Deeb homered in the fifth.
The Bears sealed the victory with two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth, giving them a 7-2 advantage. After Nichols reached on an error, junior James Lowe doubled home Nichols on the next play. Freshman Devin Thomas then singled and VMI's leftfielder made an errant throw to the infield on the play, allowing Lowe to score.
In the ninth, sophomore Paul Christian led-off with a double and later scored with a single by Deeb. The Keydets tallied one-run in the bottom half of the frame for the 7-3 final.
Eight players recorded hits for Brown in the win, led by Thomas' 3-4 performance. Deeb and Nichols both drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Danny Hughes' hit streak came to an end at nine however, as he went 0-4.
On the mound, sophomore James Cramphin picked up his first win of the season. In seven inning of work, he allowed two runs on just five hits, striking out four and walking one. Senior Harris Frankel pitched two innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit.
In game two, VMI put four on the board right out of the box, aided by two Brown errors. The Keydets got runners on first and second with back-to-back errors by the Bears. A single followed by a double gave VMI its first run. The Keydets then cleared the bases with a three-run homer, putting them up 4-0.
Brown cut into the lead in the second with Lowe scoring on an error. In the fourth, Lowe hit a deep fly ball which allowed Deeb, who reached on a double, to tag up and score.
The Bears went on to tie up the contest at 4-4 in the fifth. The team tallied two runs on two hits, including a solo homer by Thomas. VMI struck back in the seventh though, getting five runs on four hits, to take the lead for good. Each team added one more run by the end of the game for the 10-5 final.
Thomas went 2-4 at the plate to lead the Bears. Hughes, who homered in the ninth, and freshman Robert Dykehouse went 1-3 with an RBI each.
On the mound, sophomore Shaun McNamara suffered the loss, pitching six and one-third with seven strikeouts.
Brown continues its spring break trip as it heads over the University of Virginia tomorrow for a 7 p.m. game.
