Coach Marek Drabinski's Brown baseball team swept High Point University in the final games of its spring trip, beating the Panthers 3-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second game to improve its record to 5-13-1 overall.
Junior Sam Jennings (New Ashford, MA) pitched six and two-thirds innings in the first game, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Jennings recorded four strike-outs and one walk. Senior Dan Spring (Washington, DC) came into relieve Jennings and eanred the save in two and a third innings, recording four strike-outs. Sophomore Bobby Wiginiton (Fresno, CA) was 2-4, and drove in two runs in the seventh innings to give Brown the lead for good.
The Bears went on to win the second game, 2-0, with junior Joel DeMaria (Santa Rosa, CA) pitching a four hit complete game shutout. Sophomore Cameron Mitchell (Apex, NC) saved the game for the Bears hitting 2-2 with a homerun and two RBI. Mitchell also had a stolen base. Sophomore Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) was 2-3, with a double and a run scored.
The Bears return to Providence for their home opener against Vermont in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 2, starting at 1:00 p.m.
