WILMINGTON, NC - The Bears exploded for five runs in the top of the first inning on their way to an 8-2 victory over UNC Wilmington in the nightcap to salvage a split in Sunday's doubleheader at Brooks field. Brown fell 3-1 in the first game of the day.
In game two, the Bears (6-5) got a huge boost from senior pitcher Jamie Grillo (Bellingham, MA) who earned his first victory of the season by throwing a nine-hit, two-run complete game for the Bears. Grillo also fanned six batters in the game.
Senior Shaun Gallagher (West Chester, PA) was an offensive force on Sunday going 5 for 8 with two homeruns, two doubles and two RBIs in the doubleheader. In the first game, Gallagher went 2 for 4 with a homerun before going 3 for 4 with a homerun, two doubles and two RBIs in game two. Senior Rick Lynn (Towaco, NJ) went 2-4 in the nightcap and freshman Jeff Nichols (Medford, NJ) continued to swing a hot bat as he launched his first collegiate homer, a two-run shot in the top of the first inning.
In game one, the Bears fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, but came back with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the score 1-1. The game remained tied through four innings until the Seahawks added a run in both the fifth and eighth innings to pull ahead 3-1.
Sophomore pitcher Sam Jennings (New Ashford, MA) went seven and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out two.
Gallagher led the charge offensively, going 2 for 4 with a homerun and an RBI. Sophomore Rob Deeb (West St. Paul, MN) was 1 for 4 with a double and Nichols also added a single for the Bears.
The Bears are now 6-5 and will return to action on Monday, March 25 for a 2:30 game at High Point.
