Santa Clara, CA - The Brown baseball team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-5 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday. A two-run homer by senior Matt Kutler in the eighth inning gave the Bears a key 6-3 lead. Junior Shaun McNamara recorded the win on the mound, pitching seven and two-thirds of an inning while giving up five hits and striking out six.
Junior Paul Christian got the scoring started in the second inning, drilling an RBI single up the middle. The Bears added two more runs in the inning on a fielder's choice and an error.
Each team tallied a run in the fourth as Brown held a 4-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning. It was then that the Broncos rallied for two runs, cutting the lead down to one, 4-3. Brown cashed in on Kutler's homer in the eighth as it proved to be game clincher.
Santa Clara threatened in the bottom of the eighth but was held to just one run. Brown added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with an RBI single by senior James Lowe.
Freshman Jeff Dietz picked up the save on the mound as he kept the Broncos at bay in the bottom of the ninth, allowing just one run.
Kutler finished the game 2-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Danny Hughes went 1-3 with a solo homerun and two runs scored.
Brown will play San Jose State at 9:30 Eastern Time tonight. The team will then close out its three-game series with Santa Clara on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
