Auburn, AL - The Bears (1-2) were dealt a setback at the hands of the Auburn Tigers (6-4) on Friday evening, losing an 11-2 game in the first of four contests this weekend. The Tigers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in the first inning, knocking Brown starter Will Weidig (Katy, TX) out of the game after five innings. Senior shortstop Matt Nuzzo (Everett, MA) led the way for the Bears, going 1-3 with an RBI.
The first inning set an auspicious tone for the rest of the game, as the first two Auburn batters took the ball out of the park, and the first four reached base safely. After the pair of home runs by the initial two Tigers, Auburn followed with two and three-run home runs later in the inning, for a 7-0 lead after the first.
After a scoreless second for both sides, the Tigers added another run in the top of the third, when they hit a solo home run for an 8-0 advantage. Though pitching briefly took the upper hand, the Bears finally answered back in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. Following two singles to start the inning, Nuzzo came up with a timely hit to bring in the first run and move another runner over to third. Sophomore Pete Greskoff (Paoli, PA) then put a ball deep enough into the outfield to pick up the sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to 8-2.
Unfortunately, however, Brown's bats would do no more damage to Auburn's pitching, while the Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving them the final 11-2 margin.
The Bears will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they kick off the first game of a doubleheader against Auburn at 2:00 p.m.
