Jacksonville, FL - The Brown baseball team closed out action at the Kennel Club Classic in Jacksonville, FL on Sunday with a 19-8 loss to Michigan State. The Bears went winless at the Classic, suffering four losses. Seniors Matt Kutler and Bobby Wiginton each had a pair of hits in the loss to the Spartans.
Michigan State (4-2) rocked the Bears for five runs on six hits in the first inning and added two runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 7-0. The Spartans hiked their lead to 10-0 in the third inning with three more runs.
Brown tallied three runs in the fourth inning, cutting MSU's advantage down to seven, 10-3. Senior Bobby Wiginton started the Bears' rally with a single to center field and scored on a single by senior Matt Kutler to left field. Junior Paul Christian hit a double to center field that scored Kutler from second. Two batters later, Jeff Nichols doubled home Christian.
The Bears began the fifth inning with back-to-back singles by junior Eric Larson and senior Chris Contrino. Sophomore Devin Thomas singled through the right side, scoring Larson from second base. Wiginton collected his second hit of the game, scoring Contrino from third with an RBI single through the infield, as Brown pulled to within five, 10-5.
By the top of the seventh, Brown cut its deficit to four, 11-7, on a two-run double by junior Danny Hughes but the Spartans put the game out of reach with a six-run seventh inning to stretch the lead to 17-7. MSU added two more runs in the eighth while the Bears got one final run in the ninth for the 19-8 final.
Brown will return to action next Friday as it travels to California for a three-game series with Santa Clara.
