Statesboro, GA - The first few weeks of the baseball season are always difficult for Northeastern teams, as going down south to play usually means playing teams in midseason form. That proved to be the case Friday night, as the Brown baseball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Georgia Southern (10-6), 9-2.
Junior Jeff Dietz (Altamonte Springs, FL) hit Brown's first home run of the year, a ninth-inning solo shot, and senior tri-captain Bryan Tews (Park Ridge, IL) had the Bears' other RBI on a bases-loaded single. Senior tri-captain Ethan Silverstein (Woodbridge, CT) took the loss, while freshman Rob Wilcox (Columbia, SC) and senior Paul Costa (East Providence, RI) impressed in relief.
Brown found itself in a 3-0 hole entering the third inning. After two strikeouts to start the frame, junior Ryan Murphy (Mantolokking, NJ) singled. Sophomore Steve Daniels (Fox Point, WI) and junior J.J. Eno (Kahului, HI) followed with singles to load the bases for Tews. The First Team All-Ivy second baseman singled to left, driving Murphy home, but Daniels was thrown out at the plate to end the rally.
Dietz homered to center with one out in the ninth for the Bears' other run. Eno and Dietz each had two hits to lead the team, while sophomore Matt Nuzzo (Everett, MA) doubled in the fifth.
Silverstein earned the opening day start, going three-plus and giving up six earned runs. Wilcox was solid in his collegiate debut, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits and two walks while striking out six. Costa pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing no hits and walking three while striking out two.
On Saturday, the Bears will face the Eagles again at 1:30 p.m., followed by a nightcap against Kennesaw State at 5 p.m.
