Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – The Brown baseball team split a pair of one-run games at Dartmouth, winning the second contest in the ninth, 5-4, as the two teams opened a three-game series Saturday at Biondi Park.

Brown moves to 10-23 overall and 5-12 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth now stands at 11-20-1, 7-6-1.

Game 1: Dartmouth 2, Brown 1
Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) paced the offense in the first game as he went 2-for-3, while Hunter Carey (North Hampton, N.H.) knocked in the team's lone run. 

Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) went 8.1 innings on the mound for the Bears, allowing just two runs with six strikeouts and no walks. Austen Michel earned the win in relief for the Big Green.

Dartmouth scored early with one run in the second inning when Dustin Shirley crossed the plate on a scoring error.

After six scoreless innings, Brown broke through in the ninth, when Carey drove home Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) with a two-out single through the left side to even the score, 1-1. Nevertheless, Shirley hit a one-out walk-off home run in the bottom half to give the Big Green the victory.

Game 2: Brown 5, Dartmouth 4
Phillips and Grigo had two hits apiece in the second game, while Carey drove in two runs. 

Rookie Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) tossed six scoreless innings in a no decision for the Bears, adding two strikeouts with no walks. Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) earned the win in relief and Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) picked up his third save of the season.

Phillips gave the Bears an early lead with a solo homer in the second inning. Brown added two more in the fourth inning when Carey drove in two runs with a triple to right center for the three-run lead. Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) made it a four-run lead in the eighth inning with an RBI single to left field.

After Garner kept the Big Green off the board for seven frames, the home side tied the game with four runs on four hits in the bottom half of the eighth.

Brown scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning when Grigo hit a two-out single through the left side. Dartmouth came back with one hit in the bottom half, but Vasquez induced the final fly out to seal the victory.

Brown and Dartmouth will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 PM.
