LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) racked up three hits with two RBIs and the bullpen provided five scoreless innings as the Brown baseball team defeated Siena, 7-2, in midweek action Tuesday at Siena Field.
Brown totaled seven hits and captured its second straight win to move to 9-22 overall, while Siena dropped to 10-28.
Grigo led all players with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate including a double and added a pair of RBIs, while Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) posted two hits to extend his hitting streak to seven games. Rookie Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) scored a pair of runs with two RBIs and fellow freshman Louis Gaitley (San Francisco, Calif.) also scored twice.
Sophomore Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned the win as he went four innings as the starter with two earned runs. Grant Greeno (Glen Ellyn, Ill.), Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.), Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.), JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) and Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) combined for five scoreless innings of relief, giving up a total of three hits.
Shane Barringer took the loss as he gave up three runs, two earned, in one inning as the starter.
Brown went right to work with two runs in the first inning as Grigo singled home Lomuscio before Deere added a sacrifice fly. After Siena came back with one run, the Bears kept the offense going with three runs in the top of the second, highlighted by Grigo's RBI double to right field for his second straight hit.
After Siena responded with a lone run in the bottom of the third, the two pitching staffs settled in from there, surrendering just one combined hit over the next four frames.
Delano and Grigo started the eighth inning with back-to-back singles, but Avery Short managed to retire the next three batters in order to get out of the jam. Sliepka struck out a pair of Saints in the bottom half to keep the Bears in front by three runs.
Gaitley gave the Bears an extra run in the ninth when he hit a leadoff triple and then scored when Lomuscio was hit with the bases loaded. Parke Phillips (Venice, Fla.) drew a walk with the bases loaded to add another run and Vasquez pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Brown will visit Dartmouth for a three-game series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 11:30 AM.
