TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Brown baseball team powered past Florida A&M in the first game, 9-1, before dropping the second game, 5-0, to split Saturday's doubleheader at Moore-Kittles Field.
Brown moves to 2-1 overall on the young season, while the Rattlers now stand at 6-8 overall.
Game 1: Brown 9, Florida A&M 1
Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) went 3-for-4 at the plate in the opener, adding three runs scored with a double, while Calvin Farris (San Diego, Calif.) and Joe Lomuscio (West Roxbury, Mass.) added two hits apiece. Rookie Louis Gaitley (San Francisco, Calif.) drove in three runs and Farris also added two RBIs.
Freshman Collin Garner (St. Augustine, Fla.) earned his first career win as he allowed just one run over six innings with three strikeouts. The Brown bullpen stepped up for the second straight day as Brennan Vasquez (Milton, Fla.) and Farris combined for three scoreless innings and six strikeouts to close out the game. Thomas Nicholl was handed the loss for the Rattlers, allowing three runs over five innings of work.
Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) went right to work for the Bears with an RBI single in the top of the first. Gaitley and Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) added RBI singles in the second and fifth innings, respectively, before Florida A&M jumped on the board with one run in the bottom of the fifth.
Brown continued to attack in the sixth when Farris and Lomuscio hit consecutive RBI singles. Gaitley drove in runs in the seventh and ninth innings, both on sacrifice flies, before Farris had another RBI single in the final frame. Ciufo scored on the wild pitch to add Brown's ninth run, before Farris struck out the side to seal the win.
Game 2: Florida A&M 5, Brown 0 (7 Innings)
Josh Barr earned the win for Florida A&M in the second game, going 4.1 innings with five strikeouts, as the Rattlers limited the Bears to two hits in the contest.
Dante Bosnic (Lutz, Fla.) was handed the loss for the Bears as he gave up four runs over 3.2 innings with a pair of strikeouts. JJ Sliepka (Houston, Texas) had three strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work, while Pat Petteruti (East Greenwich, R.I.) tossed a hitless sixth inning.
Florida A&M scored four runs in the fourth inning, using five hits with a pair of Brown errors to break up a scoreless game. John Capra added an RBI single in the fifth inning to pave the way for the win.
Brown and Florida A&M will complete the four-game series tomorrow at 11:30 AM.
