HANOVER, N.H. – After falling to Dartmouth in the first game, 3-1, the Brown baseball team topped the Big Green in the second game with a 9-8, 10-inning victory to close out the four-game series Sunday at Biondi Park.
Brown moves to 10-17 overall and 4-8 in the Ivy League, while Dartmouth now stands at 18-12, 8-4 in the league.
Game 1: Dartmouth 3, Brown 1
Dartmouth edged Brown in hits, 6-5, to secure a win in the first game. Beau Sulser earned the win for the Big Green as he gave up just one unearned run over the full seven innings with eight strikeouts. Max Ritchie (Woodbridge, Conn.) went six innings in the loss for the Bears, allowing three earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.
Brown scored its only run of the contest in the first inning, when Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) crossed the plate on a throwing error following a failed pickoff attempt.
Michael Ketchmark gave Dartmouth the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run home run to left field. He also hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the home side a two-run lead. Brown opened the seventh frame with a pair of hits, but Sulser used a double play to escape the jam and seal the win.
Game 2: Brown 9, Dartmouth 8 (10 Innings)
The Brown offense racked up 15 hits in the second game as six players had multiple-hit performances. Rookie Cameron Deere (Los Angeles, Calif.) had three hits and drove in three runs, while seniors Marc Sredojevic (Mendham, N.J.) and Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) also had three hits apiece. Willy Homza (Anchorage, Alaska) had three RBIs, and Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) and Rich Ciufo (Medford, N.Y.) added two-hit games.
Rookie Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla.) earned the win for the Bears in relief, while Patrick Peterson took the loss for the Big Green.
Brown opened the game with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by Deere's first career home run, a three-run homer over the left center fence.
After Brown added another run in the fifth, starter Will Tomlinson (Irvine, Calif.) kept the Big Green off the board until the bottom half of the frame, when the home side scored four times to trim the lead to one, 5-4.
Dartmouth evened the score in the bottom of the eighth, but the Bears answered right back in the top of the ninth, when Sredojevic scored on a passed ball and Homza hit a two-run homer to left field. Nevertheless, Mike Brown tied the game for the Big Green with a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.
Brown's bats continued to attack in the top of the tenth as Huntley sent home Ciufo with a single to center field. Dartmouth opened the bottom half with a base runner, but Delano responded with three straight outs to secure the victory.
Brown will visit UMass Lowell for a pair of non-conference games on Tuesday afternoon.
