PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sam Grigo (Westbrook, Conn.) had a pair of hits and Rob Henry (Cranston, R.I.) knocked in three runs as the Brown baseball team downed Bryant, 5-3, to complete the three-game weekend series sweep on Sunday at Murray Stadium.
Brown (3-6) also won both ends of Saturday's doubleheader against the Bulldogs, including the second game in extra innings. Bryant drops to 3-13 on the season.
Grigo went 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and Henry also added one run scored, as Brown outhit the Bulldogs by an 8-6 margin.
Senior Max Ritchie (Woodbridge, Conn.) picked up the win as he allowed one earned run over 5.1 innings with six strikeouts. Sophomore Bobby Leyman (North Hampton, N.H.) closed the ninth to earn the save and Chris Wright was handed the loss for the Bulldogs.
Brown jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Henry drove home Jake Rosander (Fullerton, Calif.) on a groundout to second.
The Bears added four more runs on five hits in the fifth frame, starting when Henry hit a two-run single to right field with the bases loaded. Grigo and Josh Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) added back-to-back two-out RBI singles later in the frame to give the home team the advantage, 5-0.
Bryant broke through with one run on two hits in the sixth inning and then added two more in the top of the eighth to trim the deficit to two, 5-3.
The Bulldogs made it interesting in the top of the ninth, using a pair of walks to put the go-ahead run at the plate, but Leyman was able to secure a final fly out to seal the win.
Brown will host Georgetown in a three-game series next weekend, starting with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 11 AM.
